Prix d’Invité d’Honneur aux Journées du banquier

“Explore and demonstrate the virtues of financial education as a tool for development”. This is the general objective of the “Journées du Banquier” open this Monday, December 11, 2017 at Espace Latrille Events in Abidjan Cocody. On this occasion, the Public Treasury hosted a conference on the theme: “Promotion of Financial Education in Côte d’Ivoire: Vision of the Public Treasury”

This communication was made by Mr. Kouamé Haccandy Yves, Technical Advisor, representing the Director General of the Treasury, Mr. ASSAHORE Konan Jacques.

After making the inventory, noted the shortcomings, the speaker has located the stake of the commitment of the General Directorate of Treasury and Public Accounting in the promotion of financial education.

Financial education is defined as “the process by which consumers / financial investors improve their knowledge of financial products and concepts, and acquire, through information, training or objective advice, skills and the confidence to better understand the risks and opportunities of finance, make reasoned choices, know where to find advice and know what to do to improve their financial well-being. ”

Indeed, the Treasury, said the Technical Advisor, intends to promote financial education to encourage the use of financial services and allow informed choices.

It is also an opportunity for this institution to better understand the financial mechanisms, raise awareness of financial products and services, in order to bring people to better decide.

In his development, the speaker emphasized that financial education is certainly not a panacea, but that it had become imperative in the face of a financial sector that is undergoing significant change.

Thus, in addition to the awareness campaigns on banking in Abidjan and in the interior of the country, the Treasury, through the Credit Institutions and External Finance Department (DECFINEX), intends to carry out in the medium term a diagnosis of the situation and develop a national financial education strategy.

In 2018, several actions are planned. The representative of the Director General mentioned, among other things, the establishment of training programs / projects, the establishment of a network of actors composed of promoters of initiatives, relays, technical and financial partners and trainers.

These actions, according to Mr. Kouamé Haccandy Yves, will help to design national databases dedicated to financial education.

It should be noted that the government has made financial inclusion a national priority. The Treasury, while being part of this dynamic, is working to implement this policy to effectively support economic and social development in Côte d’Ivoire.

The 2017 edition, as indicated by the Minister of Economy and Finance, at the opening of the works, wants to be the framework of exchanges favorable to the presentation of the reforms and the efforts made by the State, the expression of the expectations and the difficulties encountered by the Private Sector, the definition of prospects of collaboration for a judicious partnership between the two parties and the reflections around strategic questions for the economic development of our country.

The informal sector occupies an important place in the economy of Côte d’Ivoire as in most developing countries that face the problem of structuring this sector.

In recent years, the share of the informal sector in national economic growth has increased sharply, due to the long period of instability in the country resulting in the subsequent reduction of employment in the formal sector.
